أحد أنواع الحيوانات التي تنتمي إلى فئة الثديات، وأسرة الحبليات، ومن آكلات اللحوم، وواحد من الحيوانات القليلة التي تمتلك قدرات حسية، وجسدية كبيرة
وتلعب الكلاب أدواراً مختلفة كالصيد والرعي وسحب الأحمال والحماية ومساعدة الأفراد المعاقين، وأغراض عسكرية كالبحث عن المجرمين والمخدرات ويوجد العديد من أنواع الكلاب كالكلب الأحمر والكلب الذئب وكلب الزينة وكلب الصيد
ويعيش على الأرض أكثر من خمسمئة وخمسة وعشرين مليون كلب ويعد في المجتمعات الغربية والعربية أفضل صديق للإنسان.
كان الكلب يعرف قديماً باللغة الإنجليزية باسم دوكا Docga، ثم تطور الاسم في العصور الوسطى إلى دوقي Dogge، ويعرف الآن باسم دوق dog أي الكلب، وتختلف أحجام الكلاب وفقاً لاختلاف نوعها
إذ يوجد العديد من الكلاب الصغيرة ككلاب يوركشاير، ويصل طول هذه الأنواع إلى عشرة سنتيمترات، في حين تزن أقل من مئة وخمسة عشر غراماً
ويوجد الكثير من الكلاب ذات الحجم الكبير، حيث يعد كلب الدرواس الإنجليزي أكبرها بوزن يصل إلى مئة وستة وخمسين كيلو غراما وبطول مترين ونصف المتر.
الجراء الصغيرة جدّاً لا تمتلك أسنانًا، أمّا الجراء التي يترواح عمرها مابين 4-8 أسابيع فلديهم أسنان لبنية حادّة، وتبدأ أسنان الكلب الدائمة بالظهور عندما يبلغ 3-4 أشهر، وستظل أسنانه بيضاء لامعة حتى العام الأول من عمره.
أمّا إذا كانت الأسنان مبقعة ببقع داكنة لا سيما الأسنان الخلفيّة، يعني أنّ عمر الكلب لا يزيد عن 3 سنوات، وبعد هذا العمر تصبح أسنان الكلب صفراء، وببلوغ السنة الخامسة من عمره يبدأ الجير بالظهور على الأسنان، وتصبح أقل حدة، أما الكلاب التي تجاوزت 10 سنوات من عمرها فستكون أسنانها متشققة وبعضها مفقود
تكون عيون الكلاب المتقدمة في السن غائمة، وقد تظهر عليها بعض الإفرازات، وقد يعاني بعض الكلاب عندما يكبرون من فقدان البصر.
فحص السمع تتمتّع الكلاب الصغيرة بحاسة سمع قوية، وكلما تقدم الكلب في السن تقل قوة هذه الحاسة.
شكل الجسم والبنية العضليّة يكون شكل جسم الجراء مستدير وناعم، وعندما تكبر سيصبح لها بنية عضليّة واضحة، وتقل هذه العضلات بشكل كبير مع التقدم في العمر
تتراوح فترة حمل أنثى الكلب ما بين 45 إلى 55 يوم، كما تتجاوب الكلاب مع الإيماءات الجسديّة التي يظهرها الإنسان مثل الابتسامة، إذ تهتزّ ذيولها كاستجابة لها، وتستطيع الكلاب معرفة مزاج صاحبها من خلال لغة جسده، فقد تضع الكلاب ذيولها بينَ أقدامها عندما يبكي صاحبها.
وتعد مهارة فهم لغة الجسد لدى الكلاب مهارة فطرية لا يحتاج الكلب لتعلّمها، فقد طوّرت الكلاب هذه الخاصيّة وأصبحت جزءًا طبيعيّاً متوارثًا لديها، ويعتقد العلماء أنّ الكلاب اكتسبت هذه الخاصية مع الزمن بفضل العلاقة التي تربطها مع البشر منذ القدم.

The sizes of dogs vary according to their type, as there are many small dogs such as Yorkshire terriers, and the length of these types reaches ten centimeters, while weighing less than one hundred and fifteen grams, and there are many dogs of large size, where the English mastiff is the largest with a weight of up to a hundred Fifty-six kilograms and a length of two and a half meters. Very young puppies do not have teeth, and puppies that are between 4-8 weeks
old have sharp brown teeth, and the permanent teeth of the dog begin to appear when it reaches 3-4 months,His teeth will remain shiny white until the first year of his life. But if the teeth are speckled with dark spots, especially the back teeth, this means that the dog is not more than 3 years old, and after this age the dog’s teeth become yellow, and by the fifth year of his age, tartar begins to appear on the teeth, and it becomes less severe, as for dogs over 10 years old. Years of her life will have cracked and some missing, the eyes of older dogs will be cloudy, and some secretions may appear on them,

Their tails vibrate in response, and dogs can tell the mood of their owner through his body language. Dogs may put their tails between their feet when their owner cries. The skill of understanding the body language of dogs is an innate skill that the dog does not need to learn. Dogs have developed this characteristic and it has become a natural and inherited part of it.
Scientists believe that dogs acquired this characteristic over time thanks to the relationship they have with humans since ancient times.
