هو أي حيوان ينتمي لفصيلة الضبعيات، من الثدييات التي تلد وترضع صغارها، وهو حيوان مفترسة، لا يوجد فروقات بين إناث الضباع وذكورها، إلا أن الذكور قد تكون أكثر وزنا
حيث يبلغ متوسط وزن الذكر 47 كغم، في حين لا يزيد وزن الأنثى عن 42 كغم.
حيث تتميز بشعر جسمها الطويل الأشعث الذي يكون بلون بني داكن إلى أسود – باستثناء الكتف والرقبة حيث يكون بلون أسمر مائل للأصفر.
تتميز ضباع الغثراء بأن لها ذيل قصير عليه شعر كثيف بلون مماثل للون الجسم.
حيث ان تتميز آذان الضباع الغثراء عن مثيلتها لدى الضباع الرقطاء بأنّها أكبر حجماً وأكثر بروزا، وهي بذلك أكثر شبها بآذان الضباع المخططة.
حتى أنه للبحث عن طعامه ليلا منفردا أو فى مجموعة، وهو من الحيوانات التي تعتاش على أكل الجيف وبقايا صيد وفرائس الحيوانات الأخرى
يتميز بقوة فكيه هائلة تمكنه من سحق العظام بأنيابه، على الرغم من أن شجرة تطور السلالات هم أقرب إلى الكلبيات و زباديات، وينتميون إلى فئة سنوريات الشكل، فالضباع تشبه من الناحية السلوكية والمورفولوجية للكلبيات، ويعتبر كلاهما صيادون يصطادون باستخدام أسنانهم بدلا من مخالبهم.
كلاهما سريعان في أكل الطعام، تعتبر أقدامهما التي تحتوي على مخالب كبيرة غير حادة وغير قابلة للسحب من أجل الركض وسهولة الانعطاف الحادة.
